PRODUCTION NOTES / TRIVIA
In Just Four Minutes
While most people, including some of the cast and crew, thought that the 2009 Toronto Film Race was a great chance for Alfredo Salvatore Arcilesi to try a comedy, he insisted that a drama be made.
God's Acre screened one week after its completion at the Bloor Cinema in Toronto in June 2009, slotted number 29 out of 30 films, the majority of which were comedies. After the drama garnered the top accolades of the competition, Alfredo has since stated that while he is a fan of comedy, his biggest achievement was that a drama had won an otherwise comedy-dominated competition.
The title God's Acre comes from an unlikely source. Back in high school, Alfredo was writing an essay using Microsoft Word. Having used the word "Heaven" twice within a paragraph, he wanted to use another word in order to describe Heaven. Accessing Word's thesaurus, "God's Acre" showed up on a list of synonyms to "Heaven."
The script was co-written by Alfredo Salvatore Arcilesi and Robert Toshoff. This marks the first time that Alfredo has had a co-writer.
The script was completed in approximately 5 hours, then shot in approximately 3 hours, and edited in approximately 8 hours for a grand total of 16 hours worth of production time.
As per the rules of the 2009 Toronto Film Race, each film had to have a final runtime of no less than 30 seconds and no more than 4 minutes. Also, to successfully qualify and to keep the competition fair, each film had to include the competition-issued theme and prop element. In this case, the theme was "revenge" and the prop element was "spraying a fragrance."
The fragrance that the man sprays in the first shot of the film is labelled "God's Acre."
The film boasts a green colour palette to underscore the "Acre" aspect of fertility, Heaven.
Comprised of only 7 angles/shots.
