PRODUCTION NOTES / TRIVIA
Something Bitter, Something Sweet
The film is inspired by a news broadcast in which a convicted child sex offender was released after serving a short sentence in prison. Upon his release, he addressed the media, stating that he would repeat his offense. Seventeen hours later, he was back in custody after sexually assaulting a child.
Two weeks prior to principal photography, actor Patrick Smith, who portrayed the charismatic and deviantly eager Gavin, broke his arm while playing baseball. Alfredo used Patrick's injury and resulting cast/arm in a sling as part of the character, allowing Gavin to reveal that his arm was broken by a fellow prisoner named Eugene Forelast, a man whose son had been molested and slain by a pedophile. Also of note, the name Eugene Forelast comes from the preceding film, Roadside Florsist, in which he was so overcome with grief at the loss of his son that he drank and drove, and ultimately killed someone, thus, he was sent to prison where he would've met Gavin.
One film festival said that they enjoyed the film and would screen it if Alfredo corrected three and a half straight consecutive minutes of "flawed" footage that they claimed was "out of focus, not colour corrected and had no sound." He went back into his editor and took a look at the scene in question, only to realize that the festival had singled out the scene in which Lawrence (Robert Nolan) paces the hallway and subsequently vomits; a scene that was deliberately out of focus, incorrectly coloured and barely audible. After stating his creative choices, the festival refused to screen the film until the "corrections" were made. The film never screened at the festival.
A handful of friends and acquaintances stopped talking to Alfredo (and have yet to do so) after watching (either all or some of) the film.
Some viewers claim that the film actually showcases nudity and/or explicit sound effects. Of course, absolutely none of the above were ever used for obvious reasons.
Is the only Arcilesi Films production to never be screened at a festival.
The little girl (Rosemary) and the woman (Lawrence's wife) who appear during the Overture and the Entr'acte are actually Alfredo's younger sister and mother. The original, unedited footage is taken from a family vacation video taken by Alfredo's grandfather at Niagara Falls several years ago.
The little girl (Rosemary) on the poster is actually a photo of Alfredo's younger sister - taken years ago - posing by an apartment door. This photo can be seen in the film when Lawrence reminisces over Rosemary's image. Also of note, the back of the photo indicates that it was taken on "June 17." Alfredo was born on June 17.
Actors Robert Nolan (Lawrence) and Patrick Smith (Gavin) were staring at a blank screen during the entire opening scene. The laptop was, in fact, gutted and dysfunctional.
Marks the first of a presently four-film collaboration between Alfredo and actor Robert Nolan.
Shot on two consecutive Sundays.
Shot on MiniDV; Sony PD-170.
Received its World Premiere at the 3rd Macabre Faire Film Festival (Summer 2013) in Long Island from Friday, May 31, 2013 to Sunday, June 2, 2013. This is approximately four years and seven months after principal photography wrapped. Scent of Rosemary received two nominations: 1. Best Actor (Robert Nolan), which won, and 2. Best Director (Alfredo Salvatore Arcilesi).
While poster tag lines are not typically used on an Arcilesi Films production, a tag line was written for a film festival upon request in 2008. The tag line read: "Like death, karma knows where to find you."
