PRODUCTION NOTES / TRIVIA
Making Usher, the Usher (Contains Spoilers!)
The first table read (Sunday, June 1, 2014) and subsequent rehearsals took place at the Fu-Gen Asian-Canadian Theatre Company which operates out of a church; a fitting setting since one of the film's central characters, Usher Rothchild, is a former minister.
This marks the second collaboration between writer/producer/director Alfredo Salvatore Arcilesi and actress Sarah Cunningham. Their first endeavor was Arcilesi Films' second feature film, Canswer.
During the first location scout of the house that would ultimately become the home of Usher Rothchild, it was noted that there were two churches immediately across the street; a fitting environment for the film.
Writer/producer/director Alfredo Salvatore Arcilesi created "character soundtracks" for both Romaine Waite (Usher Rothchild) and Christina Santos (Anne). A key song was from one of Alfredo's all-time favourite recording artists, Eminem. The bridge lyrics in Stronger Than I Was (LYRICS: "It was November 31st today, would've been our anniversary / Two years, but you left on the first of May / I wrote it on a calender, was gonna call, but couldn't think of the words to say / But they came to me just now, so I put 'em in a verse to lay") were uncannily similar to key scenes in Usher, the Usher in which a calendar, an anniversary, a passage of time, the month of May, and phone calls were all incorporated.
Principal photography lasted 8 days.
During the setup for the opening tracking shot sequence - just under 6 minutes in duration - at Mrs. Sieranable's house, a vehicle blasting music drove by, delaying the start of the shot on account of ruining the audio. Ironically, the blasting music was Hideaway by Kiesza, whose video is shot in a single, continuous motion.
Actress Tara McLearnon (Mrs. Sieranable) had never been on the set of what would be her character's house. She had excitedly approached writer/producer/director Alfredo Salvatore Arcilesi with a necklace she had brought for her character, pointing out that the charm on her necklace was identical to the ornament on the front of the house, a neat coincidence.
Mary and Angela are two characters in the film. The roadside memorial scenes were shot near Angela St. while Usher Rothchild's house scenes were shot near Mary St.
Finding a baby to portray Baby Usher was no easy task. After weeks of searching, actress Tara McLearnon's (Mrs. Sieranable) friend of a friend found a suitable baby. Writer/producer/director Alfredo Salvatore Arcilesi knew that he was the one not only for his age and look, but when he learned that his name was Asher, a striking similarity to the name Usher.
Tara McLearnon's (Mrs. Sieranable) feature film debut.
Two out of the three bakery stories as told by Usher Rothchild (Romaine Waite) actually happened to writer/producer/director Alfredo Salvatore Arcilesi during his bakery clerking days.
